What is Ngarnal Community Health and why is the clinic changing?
Ngarnal Community Health is your local Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation led and managed by the Mornington Island community.
Ngarnal Community Health is taking over management of your health care from Gidgee Healing on 1 July 2026, so the Clinic will be led and managed by local people, and going forward any decisions around health priorities and funding for health services will be decided by the people of Mornington Island.
How will Ngarnal Community Health be different?
Ngarnal Community Health will offer more clinical services through a partnership with the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), with RFDS doctors and nurses living on the island (Monday to Friday) and working alongside Ngarnal staff and local Aboriginal health workers in the clinic. You will see the same doctors and nurses working in the clinic and get to know them personally.
As a local service, there will be more input from our local community, more local staff employed at the service and 100% of funding will remain on Mornington Island.
Privacy and confidentiality - how will my information be kept confidential and who can see it?
Ngarnal Community Health is dedicated to keeping patient information private and confidential, in line with tightly controlled International Standards
When patients give us permission to share their personal information, it is not sent as paper but in an electronic form (encrypted to keep it private) and only approved clinical staff will have access to read this.
You can find our privacy policy here and also at the Ngarnal Community Health building.
Will the process to get my medication still be the same?
Yes, there are no changes to the local pharmacy arrangements. Ngarnal is working with Pharmacy First, who currently provide medications, to ensure there is a smooth handover and no interruptions to your medications.
Will I still be able to access the same services including Allied Health?
Yes, Ngarnal will still offer a variety of allied health services, so podiatry, hearing, dietitians, and other specialist visits will continue as usual.
Ngarnal is also working to improve how these services are coordinated, meaning they will be easier to access and more targeted to what you actually need.
Will Doctors be consistent so I don't have to tell my story over and over?
Yes – Ngarnal has a long standing partnership with the RFDS Queensland, and will work with our local team to provide clinical services (Monday – Friday) for the Ngarnal clinic on Mornington island.
This means the same doctors and nurses will be managing your health care locally, understanding your needs and you will get to know them personally.
What is the difference between allied health and Primary Health Care?
Allied health services are a key part of the Primary Health Care team. They assist doctors, nurses, and clients in preventing or managing various health issues faced by community members, especially those with long-term conditions (e.g. Diabetes, heart conditions)
Ngarnal is committed to fostering a team approach, where patient preferences and needs are heard and valued. Above all, Ngarnal will strive to ensure that care is well-coordinated, with a focus on early intervention, increased awareness, and team-based care.
